Full Spectrum

A descriptor for cannabis extracts or products that retain a wide range of the plant’s compounds, rather than isolating a single compound. Full-spectrum means the gang’s all here—THC, CBD, terpenes, and more—working together like a cannabinoid Avengers, combining their strengths to amplify each other through the entourage effect (the synergistic interaction among components).

For instance, a full-spectrum CBD oil made from hemp may include trace THC (up to 0.3%), plus minor cannabinoids, like CBC or CBN, and aromatic terpenes. A CBD isolate, meanwhile, only contains pure CBD (which is kind of like trying to save the world with only Hawkeye, no offense).

Many patients and users find full-spectrum products more effective for certain conditions due to this synergy. However, full-spectrum cannabis extracts can have variability in composition and are not always uniform—and if derived from hemp, the THC content is kept very low.

Broad-spectrum is a related term, usually meaning a product that contains a wide range of cannabinoids and terpenes, except THC (like The Avengers without the Scarlet Witch or Dr. Strange: still powerful, maybe a bit less magic). Full-spectrum products often have a stronger flavor and aroma since terpenes are present and may be less “polished” in appearance than distillates or isolates. Expect a bolder nose and funkier flavor. (Think Hulk on laundry day.)

In regulated markets, full-spectrum labels aren’t strictly defined, so quality can vary. But generally, “full-spectrum” signals a whole-plant extract aiming to mirror the natural profile of the cannabis strain it came from, delivering a rich mix of compounds. (Avengers Assemble!)
