Delta-8 THC
A naturally occurring cannabinoid and close relative of delta-9 THC. (Which relative? Maybe your chill cousin who likes to get high and crochet.) As the chemical structure of delta-8-THC, or delta-8 tetrahydrocannabinol, differs from delta-9 only by the placement of a single carbon-carbon double bond, it appears to produce similar psychoactive effects, including relaxation and euphoria.
That said:
- Delta-8 has less historical consumption than delta-9 and, until recently, it wasn’t found in meaningfully high concentrations as it doesn’t occur in the plant in large quantities
- It’s generally described as about half to two-thirds as potent
- It delivers a milder high
- Unregulated products may contain impurities
Delta-8 is present in cannabis plants at very low levels. Therefore, many commercial products, like edibles and vape carts, are often made with delta-8 that’s been chemically converted from CBD in a lab. (So less farm-to-table, more pharma-to-tablet.)
Because delta-8 THC can be created from hemp-derived CBD, it’s sold in many U.S. states under the 2018 Farm Bill (thanks, hemp loophole!), though its legal status is complicated and some states have banned it. (Not the cool ones, though. Don’t worry.)
