CBN (Cannabinol)

A mildly psychoactive cannabinoid that is the result of most cannabinoids degrading, such as any CBD or THC isomer, THCV, or CBG. It’s a more stable molecule and the natural end point of most natural cannabinoids.

CBN is often found in harvested cannabis flower that’s been stored and exposed to oxygen over time (aka “Pot Emeritus”).

In short, CBN is basically a breakdown product of THC, CBD, and other cannabinoids. (As opposed to Beyoncé, who was a breakdown product of TLC—and if you enjoyed that line, for shame! She was in Destiny’s Child).

CBN is reported by consumers to be much less potent than THC in terms of psychoactivity, and it’s often associated with sedative effects. For example, anecdotal reports and some preliminary studies suggest this cannabinoid may enhance drowsiness or serve as a sleep aid, especially in combination with THC. (Works pretty well with a sleep mask, too—basically turns any party into a slumber party). Because of this, CBN is sometimes marketed in products for insomnia.

CBN may also have anti-inflammatory properties according to early research. However, since CBN usually occurs in small amounts (or in older cannabis—which should not be taken as a recommendation to raid grandma’s stash), its effects are not as well researched as CBD or THC.

People report that they won’t typically experience a strong high from CBN alone; instead, it’s touted for gentle therapeutic effects, like relaxation (or sharing grandma’s stash, like the good little rascal you are).
