CBG (Cannabigerol)
A minor cannabinoid in cannabis sometimes called the “mother cannabinoid” (oft overlooked, but holding this dang family together). CBG is the precursor from which other cannabinoids are synthesized in the plant. For instance, the acidic form CBGA breaks down to form THC, CBD, and CBC during plant development.
CBG itself is non-intoxicating and is found in relatively low levels in most cannabis strains—which, of course, makes it even more appealing to people who like their cannabinoids rare, organic, and emotionally unavailable. Consequently, breeders are developing CBG-rich varieties.
Early research suggests CBG may have therapeutic effects: it appears to have anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective properties and may help with conditions like inflammatory bowel disease and glaucoma.
Like CBD, CBG may interact with the endocannabinoid system in ways that complement other cannabinoids. As interest grows, CBG is appearing in oils and tinctures marketed for wellness purposes (and a pretty decent amount on nstagram)—though scientific research is still limited (presumably because not enough scientists hang out on Instagram).
