Tincture

A liquid cannabis extract traditionally brewed by steeping bud in high-proof alcohol, like a stoner’s apothecary potion. Tinctures dissolve cannabinoids and terpenes into a carrier liquid for easy dosing. Think of it as the OG cannabis concentrate.

Tinctures were once a common form of medical cannabis in the early 1900s before prohibition (often called cannabis tincture or “green dragon,” which, probably nothing historically problematic about that name, but just to be safe let’s all agree not to Google it).

Modern tinctures use either alcohol, glycerin, or MCT oil as a base, and they come in small bottles with dropper tops for easy dosing.

Tinctures are typically administered sublingually, meaning “under the tongue,” and held for around 30–60 seconds so some of the cannabinoids absorb through the oral mucosa into the bloodstream. (“Oral mucosa.” Try saying that fast with a mouth full of weed oil. By the time it hits, you’ll be a ventriloquist.) This under-the-tongue backdoor bloodstream hack means faster effects (about 15–30 minutes for effects) compared to swallowing, because it bypasses some of the digestive process. If swallowed directly, tinctures act more like an edible with a slower onset.

Tinctures are popular for medical patients and those who want a smoke-free, precise dosing method. They’re often sold with marked droppers (e.g., each ml contains X mg of THC and/or CBD).

People also mix tinctures into beverages or recipes—though if it’s alcohol-based, the taste is quite bitter.

Because of the alcohol content (if ethanol is used), tinctures have a long shelf life and do not require refrigeration—perfect for the doom-prepper who also dabs.

A “full-spectrum” tincture will contain the array of cannabinoids and terpenes from the source plant, whereas some tinctures might be just THC or CBD isolate in a carrier.

The versatility of tinctures make them a staple, and effects can range from mild to strong depending on dosage; tinctures can be formulated very potent if desired.

In short, tinctures are the Swiss army knife of cannabis delivery: smoke-free, flexible, discreet, and fast(ish). Whether you’re microdosing for calm or diving in deep, a tincture lets you dial it in—one drop at a time.
