Adaptogen

A natural substance, typically an herb or mushroom, thought to help the body resist and adapt to stress.

Just think of it as nature’s way of helping you slap some yoga pants on those adrenal glands.

Ashwagandha, ginseng, and reishi mushrooms are just a few of the adoptogens believed to deliver support to the adrenal system by normalizing body functions. (Because the last thing you want during stress is abnormal body functions—just ask The Hulk or Stephen King’s Carrie.)

What properties must herbs and mushrooms possess to be classified as adaptogens?

  • Non-toxic at normal doses
  • Help the entire body cope with stress
  • Assist in restoring overall balance

While adaptogens have been used in traditional medicine for centuries to combat fatigue, anxiety, and other stress-related conditions, the science is still out. Today, the evidence for their efficacy remains limited, and they’re viewed as a complementary aid rather than a cure-all. (To stretch the yoga pants metaphor—it’s not enough to just own ’em, you gotta use ’em, girl).
